Everything you need to know about the Pomsk& our breeding program

General Questions

  • Where are we located?

We are just off the A1 between Pontefract & Doncaster in Yorkshire, UK

  • Are you licenced breeders?

    Yes we are.

We are licenced by The City of Wakefield Metropolitan District Council.

    Our Licence number is: LN/000000892

We hold a 2 year licnece which currently expires on 21st January 2021

Our rating is currenty 4 stars out of 5, this being the highest rating they can award us being first time licence holders.

We passed our inspection meeting ALL the higher welfare standards we were required to.

As from the 1st October 2018 Dog breeding legislation has changed and it is highly likely any breeder that breeds frequently should be licensed. Breeding without a licence when the breeder comes under scope of the legislation is ILLEGAL

  • Can we visit you & the dogs?

Yes, We actively encourage prospective owners to pay us a visit or join us on a walk to meet us and the pack before they make a decision to apply for one of our Pomsky puppies.

  • Can I join your waiting list for a puppy?

Yes, however we do limit spaces so it will depend on how many people we already have on our list at that time but we do keep a list of those wanting a space who have been vetted and offer available spaces as they become available in order of that list.

  • Do you ship your puppies outside the UK?

No, unless you are an established breeder with references.

We do not ship our Pomsky pups to New Zealand , Australia., Japan, China & Singapore. Other destinations may be excluded due to transport time and importation restrictions

Pomksys puppies can travel to Europe from 15 weeks of age and the USA/ Canada from around 10 weeks of age.

Any additional costs relating to transportation are payable on top of a puppies price. This includes but is not limited to - Flight crate, Rabies Vaccination, Pet Passport, Fit to Fly exam, commercial transportation paperwork, Flight Cost & Boarding and Training Fee.

Please note no local import charges are incuded and are the responsibility of the new owner.

  • I am in the UK, can you deliver my puppy to me?

No,  our owners must collect our puppies from us when they are ready to leave.

  • Can you recommend any other UK Pomsky Breeders?

We can only tell you full details of our own program.

However if you are looking for other reputable Pomsky Breeders in the UK we recommend looking at the UKPA (United Kingdom Pomsky Association).

All their breeders fully utilise the BVA health testing schemes and members are required to adhere to a strict code of ethics regarding breeding practice and animal husbandry.

  • Do you offer breeding rights?

The answer in 99%  of cases is no.

Our puppies are sold as pets only on strict spay/neuter contracts. We do this to ensure the breed is protected in its development as the breed is not yet stable in its adherance to breed standard & the curret gene pool is very small.

We have on occassion allowed our puppies to leave with breeding rights to known established breeders only, where there is a clear benefit in the wider breeding program to do so.

Pomsky Breed

  • What breeds should be in a Pomsky?

An F1 Pomsky will only be Husky and Pomeranian in the 50/50 split. Other generations may also contain % of American Eskimo and German Spitz Klein.

The UKPA only approves the use of the Siberian Husky, Pomeranian, American Eskimo and German Spitz Klein in the development of the breed at present.

A dog that contains breeds outside of these approved breeds is not re-guarded as a Pomsky.

  • What health issues are a concern?

It is entirely possible for any of the known genetic illnesses present in Huskies, Pomeranians, American Eskimos and German Spitz Klein to appear in the Pomsky.

The main concerns are hip and elbow dysplasia, Glaucoma and Patella issues.

We would encourge research into the pedigree breeds used to fully understand what could potentially appear.

Pomskies from health tested lines are so far very healthy as a breed. This is why it is critical to health test all breeding dogs and ensure they are likely to pose less risk of genetic inheritance of these diseases.

  • Can you explain the different generations?

An F1 Pomsky is the result of breeding a female Siberian Husky with a male Pomeranian. This generation are 50/50 Husky and Pomeranian.

An F1b Pomsky is the result from breeding an F1 Pomsky back to one of the foundation pedigree  breeds. The percentage split when only husky and pomeranian are involved is 75/25 or 25/75. It is important to remember the Husky percentage is always stated first in a Pomskies breed split. The split will vary where the other foundation breeds of the American Eskimo and the German Spitz Klien are involved.

An F2 pomsky is generally the result of mating an F1 Posmky to an F1 Pomsky. There are other ways to create F2 such as breeding an F1 Pomsky to an F2 Pomsky still creates F2 Pomsky. Percentage breed split can vary greatly at this stage again due to what combination of foundation breeds are being used in the particular pairing selected by the Pomsky Breeder.

As with the F1b Pomskies, an F2b Pomsky is the result of breeding an F2 Pomsky back to a foundation breed

F3 Pomskies are generally the result of mating two F2 Pomskies. The breed percentage split can also vary in this generation as there is potential to see all four foundation breeds.

We are proud to be the first UK Pomsky breeders to obtain this generation with our F3 litter born on 6th May 2018.

  • What is meant by 'Foundation' Breeds?

When we refer to 'Foundation Breeds' we are simply refering to the pedigree breeds used in the Pomskies development.

  • How big will a Pomsky get?

This varies alot and will depend on generation, Husky percentage and size of parents and grandparents. Pomskies can easily range from 6kgs to 24kgs, but we can generally give a fairly accurate adult weight range on our pups but we do not guarantee it as some do surprise us.

The UKPA Breed Standard lists the following size ranges for dogs and bitches within the Breed.

    Bitches Weight - 7-12kgs

    Bitches Height -12-16 inches

    Dogs Weight - 8-14kgs

    Dogs Height - 14-18 inches

It is important to note, that these size ranges in the breed standard are a goal to work towards and not all Pomskies will conform to this in early generations. It is thus a tool for breeders to help better select future breeding stock.

  • Do Pomskies shed much?

Pomskies being double coated dogs tend to have two seasonal major coat blows a year. It is in these periods that alot of fur is shed as they loose their undercoat.

Raking daily with a good undercoat rake will help remove the excess hair and reduce the impact to the fur all over your house. Another option is to take your dog to the groomers for a de-shed coat blow out.

If having a low shedding dog is important to you then a Pomsky may not be the breed for you.

Our Breeding Program

  • How long have you been breeding Pomskies?

We established in 2014 and our first litter of F2 Pomsky puppies was born in Sept 2015. This was the litter that gave us our stud Maverick.

  • What health tests do you carry out before breeding?

We follow all breed specific testing for all foundation breeds in a dogs history as outlined by the UK Kennel Club.

All our dogs have their hips and elbows scored via the BVA health schemes and we run both the BVA standard eye test (annually) and Gonioscopy test (3 yearly) as well.

Our breeding Pomskies are genetically tested via Embark Dog DNA. This test screens them for over 160 genetic disease markers as well as telling us how much of their DNA was inherited from each foundation breed. The test also includes other traits such as coat colour, body size and wether they carry the newly discovered blue eye colour linkage.

Our dogs are also genetically colour tested, whilst this is not a health test it is an important research tool to track the colours a pair produce compared with their DNA colour traits.

Our ongoing membership to the UKPA (United Kingdom Pomsky Association) requires us to carry out this testing and submit results to them so the health of the breed can be monitored.

  • How many litters do your females have before retiring?

This is more a question of how many can they have.

The maximum we allow in line with UK Kennel Club, United Kingdom Pomsky Association  and Higher Standards under breeding licence regulations is 4.

However, some may have one litter and retire some more. The key factor is how the bitch copes with pregancy, birth and puppy rearing and also how she recovers. If we feel, or a vet advises, it is detrimetal to a bitches ongoing health to breed her again we won't.

  • What happens to your females when they retire from breeding?

Once our girls retire, they are spayed via keyhole surgery as it is less invasive and offers a much faster recovery time. This also prevents the risks associated with being entire such as Pyometria.

Some stay with us after retiring and enjoy being surrogate aunties to future pups. Others, where we feel they would benefit from a quieter enviroment are placed into homes usually with our family, friends and existing owners so we know exactly where they are and can always keep in touch.

Puppies

  • At what age can I take my puppy home?

We do not allow puppies to go home before 8 weeks of age for UK homes. This is a legal requirement as well as being important for your puppies social development. Sometimes we will not allow puppies to go home until 10 weeks if we feel it is in their best interests.

For European homes puppies are not legally allowed to be shippped until 21 days have passed after their rabies vaccination is given. Guidelines are that this can be adminstered at 3 months of age so they can generally leave 15-16 weeks of age.

For homes in the USA and Canada puppies can travel from around 10 weeks of age. This will be dependant on particular import requirements and if a rabies vaccination is required or not.

  • What comes in my puppy pack?

We try and make sure our puppy packs are as comprehensive as possible, so our owners go home well prepared with their new arrival.

Contents may vary but generally includes the following at a minimum:

    UKPA Registration Papers

    4 Weeks FREE Insurance

    Sales Contract

    1 Year Genetic Health Guarantee.

    Vaccination Card

    Copy of Vet Health check

    Worming Records

    Weight Records

    Microchip transfer document

    Parents Information

At least a weeks supply of Raw food or Kibble

    A toy

Vet bed or blanket with siblings scent

    Treats

    Poo Bags

    Natural Chews

  • How do you socialise your puppies?

Our puppies are raised in our family home so they are well accustomed to the enviroment and normal household smells and noises.

We also follow a specific puppy rearing and socialisation protolcol called 'Puppy Culture' which is proven to help raise more confident, intellegent and healthier puppies.

This program starts at a very early age, just 3 days old with a process known as Early Neurological Stimuation. It progresses in a structured way as the weeks go on introducing things at key points and challenging the puppies to learn new skills. This program enables us to see how our puppies personalities are developing and thus help us determine which puppy coud suit you best.

On top of this we have various friends and family come and handle the puppies so they are familar with different types of people of all ages.

Our own children have alot of input in helping raise the puppies from a very young age and their friends visit often, so our pups are generally well socialised to children.

  • What is your worming schedule for puppies?

We worm our puppies with Panacur at 2/5 and 8 weeks of age.

For puppies still with us past 8 weeks of age we continue worming them monthly whilst they are with us.

  • What vaccinations do your puppies have prior to leaving?

Our puppies are first vaccinated at 6 weeks of age by our Vet.

Their second vaccinations are then due at 10 weeks of age. If they are still with us at this point we ensure they recieve their second vaccinations.

  • Do you microchip your puppies?

Yes, our puppies are microchipped at 6 weeks of age assuming they are big enough to do so.

The chips are registered to us initially and we transfer them to new owners for FREE on full payment and collection of your puppy.

Our vet is currently using AVID microchips.

Application & Ownership

  • How do I become an owner?

We require our owners are vetted to check the suitabilty of the breed to them and also so we can gauge their requirements and the support they will need with their puppy.

Our applications start with a short enquiry form and then move to a  general conversation and physical meeting.

If an application is successfull at both stages then either a match will be offered to an available puppy or a deposit list place if available will be offered for future litters.

  • How do I get a waiting list place?

First you need to complete our application form

We then carry out vetting of you as a potential owner and we are also vetted by you in this process. This will entail an initial phone call and then a physical meeting.

If everyone is happy then a waiting list place can be offered and is allocated on receipt of your non-refundable holding  fee of £200

  • You have a puppy available I like, how do I apply to take them home?

    Simple....

send us an enquiry with your details and let us know which puppy you are interested in.

We will then arange an informal chat about the puppy and yourselves to find out if  it would be a good fit for you and the puppy.

If all has  gone well  then we will arrange for you to come and visit the puppy and see if its a match.

  • How long will I be on the waiting list?

This is a hard question to answer.....

Generally we aim to be able to offer a puppy for matching within 12 months to those in waiting list places 1-20.

Sometimes this will be much faster, sometimes slower as we depend on mother nature blessing us with some Pomsky pups and also when those on the list are actually ready take a puppy home.

The other factor that can affect time on the deposit list is what your requirements are and whilst we can offer the opportunity of a puppy to be matched to you for whatever reason you may chose to wait for the next litter which will increase your waiting time.

We have had past owners who have chosen to wait well over a year on our waiting list and also others who have joined it only to be matched to their perfect Pomsky puppy weeks later.

Contracts

  • Why do I have to sign a contract?

Our puppy contracts are in place to protect our puppies welfare first and foremost. They are also in place to protect our owners and detail our obligations as breeders to you.

Our contracts are just as legally binding of us as they are to our owners regarding expectations and obligations surrounding our puppies.

  • What is the endorsement on my puppies papers?

We add an endorsement for breeding on our puppies papers, this is regardless of they are on pet or breeding contracts.

This endorsement is to help prevent unscrupulous breeding of our puppies.

Where a puppy is on a breeding contract we will lift endorsements on prodution of the dogs health test results showing passing scores.

We do not lift endorsements for puppies sold on pet contracts.

  • What is the Spay/neuter clause?

Our puppies sold on pet contracts are required to be spayed/neutered once they are old enough.

This is not just to prevent breeding it is for the health of your dog.

Please note spaying or neutering a puppy from us prior to 9 months old invalidates our genetic health guarantee since some problems have shown linkage to a lack of hormones due to early fixing.

  • What is the genetic health guarantee?

All our puppies come with a 1 year genetic health guarantee.

Whilst we make every effort to health test our breeding dogs and stack the odds in our favour there is always a risk that an unexpected problem could arise. Our genetic health guarantee backs our puppies and steps in to offer our owners something back should a genetic health problem arise in their puppies first year.

Full details are given when going through our vetting process.

Pricing & Payments

  • How much does a puppy cost?

Pricing is generally between£2500 and £3000, depending on the overall quality of any particular puppy.  We do reserve the right to vary this as appropriate.

Our pricing is not affected by a puppies eye colour. It is based on how well any particualr puppy is assessed to the current UKPA breed standard.

We try and determine pricing on our puppies by 4/5 weeks of age.

  • What payment methods do you accept?

Currently the majority of our puppies are paid for via BACS bank transfer.

    We do take cash payment.

We issue invoices requesting all payments and confirm receipt in writing so the process is fully documented.

  • Do you offer payment plans?

Yes and No is the answer, I will explain further..

We do not allow people to take a puppy home without payment in full.

However, we are happy for people to join our waiting list and make payments towards their puppy whilst they are on the list until such time they have paid enough to be able to be matched to a puppy.

Once matched to a puppy you can also pay for your puppy weekly if you would like so long as the balance is paid in full by the time the puppy is 8 weeks old and ready to go home.

  • When will I be required to pay for my puppy?

For UK owners collecting their puppy from us and taking a place on our waiting list list:

Any transport costs must be paid in full before your puppies transport can be booked.

  • How much is the waiting list fee?

This does go towards the price of your Pomsky puppy.

Places are ordered by date holding fees are received.

  • How much does international shipping cost?

PLEASE NOTE WE DO NOT SHIP OUR PUPPIES FOR PET HOMES ONLY ESTABLISHED BREEDERS LOOKING TO EXPAND THEIR GENE POOL

International shipping is an additional cost and is by quotation as each circumstance will be slightly different.

Additional costs are made up of the physical transport, a suitable transport crate, any additional  vet certifications or treatments & our additional time caring for and training your puppy before it can travel.

Please note import charge may apply when importing a puppy to your country. These import duties are not included in our cost of transport and are the buyers responsibilty.
